Nick Cave’s Son Jethro Lazenby Dies at 31

Nick’s Cave announced the death of his eldest son Jethro Lazenby. He is 31 years old.

The musician wrote in a brief statement released on Monday, “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away. We are grateful for the family’s privacy at this time.”

Lazenby was born in Australia in 1991, Cave and his mother are models Beau Lazenby. Cave’s second son, Lukewith his first wife, Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro, was born just ten days later in Brazil. Lazenby grew up modeling herself, walking the runway for major luxury brands like Balenciaga and Versace. He was also photographed by creative director Celine Hedi Slimane and work on their own music projects. He has also acted in several movies with the name “Jethro Cave”, including the 2007 movie Corroboree and 2011 My little princess.

Lazenby’s death comes just days after he was released on bail from a Melbourne prison after admitting to assaulting his mother last month. Based on Metroupon his release, a judge ordered Lazenby to receive substance abuse treatment and avoid contact with his mother for two years. The Independent also noted that at the time of his arrest last month, his agent Sean Ghattas told that outlet that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, which had affected his judgment. Lazenby will return to court June 29 to be convicted of assault, as well as face other charges related to a theft from 7-Eleven.

Lazenby grew up in Australia and said in a 2012 interview with Evening Standard that he didn’t have any relationship with his father until he was “about seven or eight years old”. The musician also admitted to a journalist in 2008 that they had a somewhat strained relationship at first. “It was a tough time, but it turned out great,” Cave explains. “I’m sorry, I didn’t have much contact with Jethro in the early years, but now I have a great relationship with him.”

This tragic news comes seven years after the death of another of Cave’s sons, Arthur, who died in 2015 at the age of 15 after falling from a cliff in Brighton and sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Cave described his son in a statement at the time of his death as a “beautiful, happy and loving boy.”
