NJ police shooting: 2 officers shot in Newark

NEWARK, NJ (WABC)– A Newark neighborhood is on lockdown after two Newark police officers were shot and wounded.
Reports of the incident came in around 2 p.m. Tuesday near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue.
Law enforcement sources say one officer was shot in the neck and the other in the leg.
The officials were taken to the university hospital. Her condition is not yet known.
NewsCopter 7 video appeared to show a huge reaction from officers taking up tactical positions near the scene of the shooting.
The suspect is not in custody and may be negotiating with local law enforcement.
Residents in the area have been urged to avoid the area and stay clear of the crime scene.
As a precaution, a spokesman said Chancellor Avenue School is on lockdown but all students and staff are safe.
Though little information was immediately made available, Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted that he was monitoring the situation:
“I am aware of and closely monitoring the evolving situation in Newark. I am in contact with local authorities and the state is providing resources upon request. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure all residents are safe.”
