Nobel Prize Awarded for Discoveries in Evolution

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Svante Pääbo, a scientist working at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, for his discoveries concerning the genome of extinct hominins and the human evolution.

The Nobel committee said Dr Pääbo overcame the challenges of recovering and analyzing ancient DNA to sequence the genome of Neanderthals, an extinct relative of present-day humans. He also discovered a previously unknown relative of humans, called Denisova.
