North Korea Cites Explosive National Covid-19 Outbreak, Reports First Death

SEOUL — North Korea reports its first death from a Covid-19 outbreak that it says is the first that has rapidly spread across the country.

Pyongyang state media said more than 350,000 people had contracted a fever that had “spread across the country” since late April and that 187,800 people were currently being isolated and treated. The report says six people have died and one has tested positive for the BA.2 Omicron variant. It did not say whether others who had died were examined.
