Northwest Harvest partners with farmers across the state to feed those in need

Much of the fresh fruit and vegetables that feed Northwest Harvest are grown, harvested, and shipped to Seattle by farmers across the state.

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash – The SODO Community Market is one of the clearer symbols of the work Northwest Harvest is doing to reduce food insecurity across Washington state.

Much of the fresh fruit and vegetables they provide is grown, harvested, and shipped to Seattle by farmers across the state.

“We have incredible partnerships with growers all over Washington, especially the Yakima Valley, which is truly our state’s breadbasket,” said Laura Perez Hamilton of Northwest Harvest.

She explains their partnership with Yakima Nation Farms, formerly Inaba Farms, has spanned many years.

“They have been doing an incredible job partnering with us to deliver fresh fruit and vegetables to communities across the state,” said Perez Hamilton.

According to board member Phil Rigdon, Yakima Nation Farms has a processing facility and more than 1,500 acres of land that grows 20 different types of vegetables.

The tribe purchased the property from the Inaba family, who have owned and operated it for decades.

“We were getting ready to retire and the tribe was looking for a farm to buy,” said Wayne Inaba.

He said Northwest Harvest has been a good partner over the years.

Perez Hamilton explains part of Northwest Harvest’s goal is to support small and medium-sized growers across Washington state.

“Particularly supporting blacks, indigenous peoples and people of color, who often do not have the necessary resources to be able to compete with larger farms,” she said.
