Meanwhile, in Ukraine, their victory is said to bring “extraordinary happiness” to a country being invaded by Russia.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Instagram that the war-torn country’s courage “impresses the world” and congratulated the Kalush Orchestra’s victory.

He then went on to promise to hold a future Eurovision in “free, peaceful and rebuilt” Mariupol, a city currently under Russian control. At the end of their performance at the show’s finale, Kalush Orchestra said: “I ask all of you, help Ukraine, help Mariupol, help Azovstal now.”

Watch last weekend’s Eurovision night, NME wrote: “Eurovision 2022 is all about expectations: Sam Ryder reminds us that the UK can really win this, and Ukraine shows the world how much agency they have. Yes, the contest can be silly – hello, ‘Give That Wolf A Banana’ – but it’s also strangely profound. “ Norwegian Eurovision entry Subwoolfer share ‘Jolene’ parody in Turin
