Liverpool want Jhon Duran but Benfica are now planning a January deal for the Chicago Fire forward for the upcoming January window.
That’s according to Portuguese newspaper Record, which suggests Benfica are hoping to win the race for Duran next month.
Benfica are top of the table in Portugal and have dropped just two points in 13 games so far this season.
However, they are not resting on their laurels and are still hunting for more offensive reinforcements for January as Duran is now wanted.
That will interest Liverpool, who have also been chasing Duran lately.
Colombian reporter Pipe Sierra – who broke the news in January this year that Liverpool want Luis Diaz – claimed in October Liverpool scouted Duran.
Duran, 19, joined the Chicago Fire from Envigado earlier this year and made a big impression in his debut season in Major League Soccer.
Duran has eight goals and five assists in 27 games for the Chicago Fire and is now attracting a lot of interest.
Liverpool may be hoping to lure Duran to Anfield to play alongside Diaz, but Benfica now pose a major threat to their hopes.
Liverpool target Duran could help replace Nunez and even Goncalo Ramos
Benfica sold their star striker in the summer when Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool.
The Portuguese giants brought in another striker when Petar Musa arrived, but Benfica would no doubt still be happy to add another goalscorer to replace Nunez’s prowess.
Goncalo Ramos is doing a good job so far but there is a big chance he will leave in 2023 after impressing with Portugal at the World Cup.
Duran could be seen as a player who could make a Nunez-like impression in Portugal and could also grow into the role of forward if Ramos moves on.
Duran, who is being hailed as a ‘really special’ potential, appears to be a star of the future and if Liverpool want him they may need to step in now and beat Benfica – or risk paying as much money for him as they did with Nunez .
In other news, Aston Villa star who only joined this year is now wanted by second elite club
