‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ trailer reveals Obi-Wan’s new weapon and an Uncle Owen twist

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to give us a whole new look at the man who will become Luke Skywalker’s mentor. Set against the backdrop of his mysterious exile, most fans assume we won’t get to see the loud action sequences and light duels that made the prequel become such a memorable cinematic experience.

However, a new TV spot suggests that the series will make up for Obi-Wan’s incompetence by shoving a supporting character into the warm glow of a sword, forcing Obi-Wan to make a decision – and a big change in his fighting style. Here’s everything you need to know.

In a new TV commercial for Obi-Wan KenobiLuke’s step-uncle Owen Lars finds himself threatened by Reva’s sword. And so Obi-Wan, forced to conceal his Jedi identity, initiates an explosion.

This is a big change for the Star Wars universe, as Owen has always represented the mundane side of Luke’s life and Obi-Wan as the mystic. Growing up, Luke had three father figure figures: Owen, “Ben” and Anakin. Owen was the one who raised him, Ben was the one who showed him his true nature, and Anakin was the biological father who received redemption and forgiveness on his deathbed.

While it’s interesting to see this trait change, it begs the question of whether we’ll see Obi-Wan wielding his lightsaber in the first two episodes of the show. Obi-Wan without lightsaber is like Mando without a helmet; it feels wrong and will only be displayed if it is absolutely necessary.

The early change of pace here will prove interesting. Owen is the one who finds himself in the bad books of the Empire, while Obi-Wan does his best not to interfere. But that was hard for someone with such ingrained Jedi principles.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is not just a sequel to his story, nor is it the origin of Ben Kenobi. Instead, it’s a transition between a Jedi who is supposed to protect all to a recluse who protects only one.

Even if he doesn’t use lightsaber in the first place, there’s still a lot for Obi-Wan Kenobi discover. In addition to his weapons and duties, what would Obi-Wan be like as just a green Tatooinian? Looks like we’re about to find out.

Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres May 27, 2022 on Disney+.
