Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office releases bodycam video of officer-involved shooting outside Absecon Dollar General

ABSECON, NJ (WPVI) — Authorities have released bodycam video of a shooting involving police that occurred outside a Dollar General Store in Absecon earlier this year.

Video from eight body cameras shows the moments before the May 24 shooting of 37-year-old Jalail Whitted.

Police responded to the Dollar General Store on South New Road following reports of a shooting inside the store.

According to investigators, the officer who arrived found Whitted standing in the store with a pistol sticking out of his right pocket.

Authorities say Whitted refused to drop his gun as he left the store.

The video shows Whitted saying “shoot me” before the shots were fired.

“Mr. Whitted then reached for the pistol in his right pocket and put his hand on it, prompting five police officers to fire their service weapons at him. Officers said they shot to protect the lives of nearby public, their own lives, and the lives of their colleagues,” said the Ocean County Attorney’s Office, which is overseeing the independent investigation.

Whitted was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The officers who fired their guns have not been identified.

No other injuries were reported.
