Off-duty Monterey Park police officer shot, killed in Downey

An off-duty police officer from Monterey Park was shot dead in a shopping center parking lot in Downey on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Officers were called around 3:25 p.m. to a report of gunfire at 12070 Lakewood Boulevard, according to the Downey Police Department.

The address matches that of Downey Landing Shopping Centre.

Officers found a man who had been shot, police said. Despite first aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Detectives were able to identify the victim as an off-duty officer from the Monterey Park Police Department,” Downey Police Department said. “The victim’s name is not being released at this time.”

Additional information about the shooting was not immediately available. Monterey Park police and city officials could not be reached for comment.
