Omicron COVID-19 boosters available within days

Doses of the vaccine will be ready for administration the week of September 5 after the Labor Day holiday in Washington.

SEATTLE – The Washington State Department of Health and Human Services (DOH) and other healthcare providers will soon begin offering Omicron variant-targeted booster doses of Pfizer and Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines.

On August 31, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved COVID-19 booster shots containing an Omicron component from Pfizer and Moderna.

Pfizer’s Omicron vaccine is approved for use as a single booster dose in people ages 12 and older, according to the FDA, while Moderna’s vaccine is approved for people ages 18 and older. According to the DOH, it will offer more protection by targeting more easily transferrable variants.

The bivalent vaccines, also referred to as “updated boosters” by the FDA, contain a messenger mRNA component of the original strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 and another that is associated with the omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA. 5 is common.

They are given at least two months after the primary or booster vaccination.

DOH’s updated recommendations for booster vaccinations are:

  • Individuals 12 to 17 years of age who have completed a primary vaccination course can receive Pfizer’s bivalent booster dose at least two months after their last dose.
  • Individuals 18 years and older who have completed a primary course of vaccination may receive either company’s bivalent booster dose at least two months after their last dose.
  • Those ages 5 to 11 who completed Pfizer’s primary vaccine series should continue to receive the company’s original monovalent booster vaccine for at least five months after their last dose.

Children aged 6 months to 4 years are not currently eligible for COVID-19 booster doses.

The doses are expected to be administered the week of September 5 after the Labor Day holiday in Washington.
