On the job: Paul Lamison tries trucking

Tampa, Fla. (WFLA) – The roar of engines, the smell of diesel fuel and life on the road – big rigs can offer big dreams and big opportunities.

With the current shortage of qualified truck drivers, companies are turning to places like Tampa Trucking School and instructors like Melo Paz.

A three-week course can get you on the road and driving. Trainees through the course receive hands-on training with pickup trucks. Eagle 8 HD photographer Paul Lamison tried.

The main thing Paz emphasized to him was safety – from getting in the cab to getting the truck moving.

Paul says it’s like driving a car – but much bigger. While very stressed, Paul managed to drive a large rig. He said he might not be quite ready for the long haul.

All this week, members of our News Channel 8 This Morning team will introduce and try jobs that are currently understaffed. See their report every morning this week on WFLA starting at 5am
