Janelle Monáe is sending fans straight to Twitter jail (Don’t pass go. Don’t collect $200) for liking a viral tweet comparing her to Mr. Monopoly — the mustachioed board game character informally known as Monopoly Man .

On Monday, the singer, actor and author jokingly threatened to quit music and cancel all upcoming tour dates afterward @gldnraes tweeted“Janelle Monae is finally showing how good she is instead of dressing like the Monopoly Man.” To be fair, Monáe has been known to rock more than a pair of top hats and tuxedos that evoke the classic look of the Monopoly mascot Rich uncle pennybags remember.

“Ohh y’all n— liked that 26.8k times?” Monae replied to the tweet. “no new music just for that.”

When the tweet hit 35,700 likes, the “Glass Onion” star was on added, “No new tour. I hope it was worth it lover.” At press time, the tweet had amassed more than 70,500 likes.

In case it was unclear that Monáe’s mock outrage was just a joke, the “Make Me Feel” hitmaker later said tweeted, “Monopoly Man?? …You’re pretty and funny” with crying and kissing emojis in response to the original poster.

By Tuesday morning, the running gag had spread to Instagram, where Monáe posted a crying-laughing emoji after @darkskintyee wrote in his story: “Like that monopoly fit sexy come tax me baby word Lmfaooo.”

Monáe’s comedic Twitter outburst comes shortly after they earned a 2023 Queerty nomination for their starring role in Glass Onion, the critically acclaimed sequel to 2019’s Knives Out. After the crime thriller premiered on Netflix in September, Monáe received rave reviews for her performance as a sleek tech mogul betrayed by her seedy business partner.

“When you look at it and the first act, it’s all very clear,” said Monáe of the hit mystery film.

“It’s like you think you’re as smart as the person looking at it and you’re like, ‘How the hell did I miss that?’ …you want to play it over and over again just to be sure [writer-director Rian Johnson is] don’t play tricks on you He plays pranks and is honest at the same time.”
