One Piece/Dragon Ball Z Crossover Finally Crosses to the U.S.

Goku, Toriko and Monkey D. Luffy compete in a fighting tournament.

The heroes of the manga anthology Shonen jump—Luffy from One pieceDeku out My hero academygoku out Dragon Ball ZNaruto off NarutoIchigo off bleaching, etc., etc. – are not exactly strangers to each other, having appeared together in countless video games and promotions. But oddly enough, the manga anthology’s two biggest stars (that would be Luffy and Goku) have only met once in animated form, back in 2013, in a special that never made it to America. At least not before next month.

The crossover is really a result of One piece preceded by a sequence of Torikoother Shonen jump Manga/anime that was popular at the time and was a part of it. Without worrying about how the three completely unconnected series were connected, the special featured the equally food-obsessed Luffy, Goku, and Toriko competing in a food tournament whose prize was the extremely rare meat called the Carat-Sizzled Cattle. The main characters from all three series also made appearances, but in the end the story boiled down to the three main characters fighting an inevitable great evil at the same time.

The episodes aired in Japan in 2013 and stayed there. But Toei Animation, who makes/has made all three series, has announced that sheBoth will finally come to America as the Toriko x One Piece x Dragon Ball Z Super Crossover Specialalso known One piece Episode #590 (It makes sense that the specials would be lumped together in the ongoing series One pieceas Toriko stopped airing in 2014). While it’s not yet known if they’ll be coming to a streaming service, they will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Saturday, March 4 – and with English dubbing. After putting so much work into it, I’d be very surprised if the special didn’t make it to streaming or home video sooner or later.
