Only for A$AP Rocky Is August Leather Kilt Season

Imagine, for a moment, it’s December 2012. Starting out as Harlem-born rapper, A$AP Rocky just released the lead single from his upcoming debut album, Long live A$AP, which sends shockwaves through the blogosphere in part because he’s wearing a pair of furnaces, by Rick Owens and Hood by Air, in the music video. A week earlier, the artist known as Kanye West made headlines when he sported a Givenchy leather dress designed by Riccardo Tisci during a concert in support of Hurricane Sandy relief, despite he wore the same one when he and Jay- Of Z See the throne tours throughout the previous year. On stage, Ye sometimes pairs her skirt with a Givenchy Rottweiler shirt — then, a patterned t-shirt; now, an impetus for the celebrity-led streetwear revolution.

Cut through August 2022 — years and many kilograms later (including the Vivienne Westwood he wears on the cover GQ last summer), and Rocky is getting a Givenchy leather dress back for a shoot. Rocky, who recently welcomed a baby boy with girlfriend/co-star of the 2013 “Fashion Killa” music video, Rihanna, stepped out in New York on Wednesday wearing Givenchy head-to-toe, including a black knee-length layered logo-cut sweater – long skirt, which he fitted with the brand’s G Clogs platform and Giv Cut sunglasses. He then trades his dress for a pair of wide leg pants to take his woman for a walk around the city at 4 a.m.

All told, Rocky’s contemporary Givenchy jackets make for a Long live A$APcostume -era Rocky — which may actually be by design. Ye and Rocky’s pioneering fashion statements in the 2010s laid the groundwork for the 2020 appointment of creative director Matthew Williams by the French luxury house, who founded the streetwear brand. 1017-ALYX-9SM, approved by Ye-and-Rocky in 2015. And though the cis-men-in-skirt Discourse remains disappointingly quiet, the baggy skirt duo baggy, slacks and split skirts (ahem, kg) gives way to a much looser definition of menswear.

(Even Brad Pitt is wearing a dress on the red carpet now, and he just seems a little annoyed that he still has to talk about it.)
