Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany has revealed that the club is not currently working on a contract extension with Ousmane Dembele. The Frenchman, who joined Barca for 140 million euros in 2017, is set to expire with the Catalan giants on June 30.
Dembele was one of the most exciting young players in the world when Barca signed him from Borussia Dortmund five years ago. However, mainly due to a number of unreasonable injuries, Dembele is still unable to justify his high salary. He made only 149 appearances in all competitions for the Camp Nou team, scoring 34 goals and providing 32 assists.
While Dembele’s recent performances have been encouraging, Alemany insists that there hasn’t been any recent communication between the player and the club regarding a contract extension. When asked to comment on Dembele’s situation, he said (via Diario Sport):
“Dembele’s innovation? I have a personal opinion on this topic but it is beside the point. Only he and his agents know what they will do. We haven’t heard anything for six to seven months. There are no negotiations with Dembele’s agent at this time.”
Dembele has rejected the Blaugrana’s offer of an extension in the past and refused to leave the club in January. Alemany (via Football Espana) admitted that Barcelona wanted the striker to leave during the winter transfer window, even warning him of the possible consequences.
Dembele’s contract extension could benefit Barcelona
From being threatened with being left in the cold to becoming an integral member of Xavi’s squad, Dembele has come a long way in 2022. The 25-year-old has managed to stay fit this year, playing 16 out of 20 games in La Liga. Most importantly, he didn’t cut a disappointing number in those games.
He emerged as the team’s top creative force, providing 11 assists in those 16 games. With 13 assists, Dembele became La Liga’s top assist provider this season.
If Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Adama Traore is brought back in in the summer, Barcelona can guarantee Dembele a starting place on the right flank. Given how strong he ended the 2021-22 campaign, it makes perfect sense for Xavi to give him a fresh start next season.
If Dembele openly agrees to reasonable terms, there is no reason for Barcelona to let the France international leave on a free basis.
