Orange County chiropractor charged with molesting 7 patients

An Orange County chiropractor has been charged with sexually assaulting seven patients in Irvine last year, and investigators suspect he may have other victims out there who were unaware that his touches were for his satisfaction, officials said Wednesday.

Lincoln Esguerra Carillo, 60, has ties to chiropractic offices in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and the state of Virginia, where he was arrested last week. Carillo is charged with 23 felonies and misdemeanors involving alleged sexual conduct with the seven patients between April and July 2021. But Irvine police detectives and Orange County prosecutors believe there are other victims.

“DR. Carillo used the high level of trust we place in our medical professionals to exploit his victims,” said Irvine Police Chief Michael Kent. “I am grateful for the brave victim who had the courage to come forward and to uncover his pattern of abuse. A tremendous amount of investigative work went into identifying and interviewing Dr. Carillo’s patients in order to locate additional victims and present the district attorney with a case that would support criminal charges.”

Carillo was transferred to Orange County from Virginia on Monday and appeared in court from the Orange County Jail on Tuesday. Records show he remains incarcerated in lieu of $1 million bail. Carillo is due to be charged on Friday.

The criminal case against Carillo bears similarities to the allegations leading up to the conviction of Dr. Larry Nassar, a US gymnastics coach, who had sexually abused gymnasts under the guise of manipulating their bodies. In explaining his work, Carillo has described his expertise as “attempting to reduce pain and discomfort through manipulation and adjustment of the spine.”

Carillo was charged with seven counts of sexual penetration while fraudulently representing a professional purpose, four counts of sexual harassment involving a person who was unaware of his actions, and a dozen counts of touching another person’s intimate part.

Carillo worked at Twins Chiropractic in Irvine for about four years. According to the public prosecutor’s office, between April and May last year he treated a patient several times for chronic neck pain. On seven visits, Carillo is accused of sexually abusing the woman. The woman reported the sexual assaults to the Irvine Police Department in May 2021.

Irvine Police identified six other alleged sexual assault victims who were being treated by Carillo at Twins Chiropractic between January and August 2021, including a woman who required chiropractic care after being injured in a car accident. Some of these incidents occurred in June and July 2021 according to the initial police report. In those incidents, he was accused of touching someone’s privates a dozen times.

Police have connected Carillo to California chiropractic offices in Artesia, Los Angeles, Fountain Valley, Seal Beach, Long Beach, Irvine, Orange, Upland, Cerritos, Costa Mesa, Placentia, Garden Grove and Riverside, and in Herndon, Virginia.

Investigators are investigating other possible crimes involving the identified victims. One of the unidentified female victims has told Irvine Police that she believes she was molested under the guise of manipulating her body more than 20 times in 2021 alone. Prosecutors and the Irvine Police Department said they expect the number of charges to increase.

“Vulnerable patients seeking chiropractic care for pain shouldn’t have to worry about sexual assault,” Orange County Dist said. atty Todd Spitzer said in a statement Wednesday.

Records from the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners show that Carillo forfeited his 28-year license to practice in the state in February. This license shows that he was also licensed to work in Irvine, Sunrise Health Center in Long Beach, and a side office in Artesia. License records showed he was also authorized to practice and operate an office in Virginia, where he held that license until 2020.

Police records show Carillo was arrested in Virginia in 2013 for assaulting a family member. It is unclear how the arrest was resolved.

According to a biography on Twins Chiropractic’s website, the father of three was born in San Francisco. He became interested in his medical specialty after a chiropractor successfully treated the headaches and injuries his parents sustained in a car accident.
