Over A Quarter Million People Went To Go See Queen Elizabeth’s Coffin At Westminster Hall

It was certainly a number that exceeded expectations. There’s a new report saying over a quarter of a million people have seen Queen Elizabeth’s coffin at Westminster Hall. The monarch was buried on Monday. Here’s what you need to know.

Britain’s culture secretary, Michelle Donelan, gave the number after the nation’s longest-reigning monarch was buried at Windsor Castle, new reports said. She added that her department was still “putting together the numbers” of how many people had queued for hours in London to get past the Queen’s coffin at Westminster Hall, but that she believed it was around 250,000.

Donelan also said that the money spent on the funeral was well worth it, although it has not yet been made public. “I don’t think anyone would really question that value for money because it was such an important day for the nation to mourn someone who was arguably one of the greatest monarchs we’ve ever had,” he said you . “Personally, I believe she deserved a wonderful farewell…She has served our nation relentlessly, day in and day out, for 70 years. It’s so unbelievably unbelievable.”

The royal family is observing another week of mourning for the queen after a state funeral on Monday that was filled with emotion and ceremony for the eyes of the world. One of the most memorable aspects of the past ten days has been the huge queue of people waiting – some for more than 24 hours – to pay their respects to the Queen. At one point the line stretched nearly five miles from the Palace of Westminster past Tower Bridge.

The Queen was eventually buried with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, during a private evening funeral attended by only close family. The state funeral at Westminster Abbey was attended by dignitaries, including hundreds of heads of state, and with London packed with mourners, the event prompted the Metropolitan Police’s largest policing operation. Among the 2,000-strong congregation at the abbey were foreign royals, prominent figures in British life and world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.
