At the request of players, Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the second beta of Overwatch 2 will offer a competitive experience – so to speak.
Competitive play in Overwatch serves as the franchise’s ranked play mode, pitting users against each other based on skill rankings. By most reports, the competition does a better job of matching players against their own kind than traditional matchmaking.
As a popular way to play the hero shooter, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that those looking forward to the next Overwatch 2 beta have made many requests for the mode’s inclusion.
And it seems that Blizzard has largely heeded those appeals when planning content for the upcoming beta phase.
The second beta of Overwatch 2 will be competitive
In a message to the community regarding its “Beta Testing Goals,” Blizzard Entertainment announced that the upcoming Overwatch 2 beta will add a “partial” version of the competition.
This stripped down iteration of the experience represents a response to user demands and allows the developers to continue designing a revamped competitive mode for launch.
Blizzard partially explained the logistics of the less competitive mode: “…we decided to enable a partial competitive ruleset that allows teams to play the full maps while still having backfills if a player disconnects. ”
Blizzard hosted the first Overwatch 2 beta from April 26th to May 17th, giving PC players the chance to participate in the all-new experience — with no competitive mode.
The next beta test will go live on June 28th and end on July 19th. Fortunately, this time users on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S have the opportunity to join the fun around.
But if you miss it, don’t worry. Developers hinted in a recent interview with content creator Potxeca that a third beta session of Overwatch 2 could arrive before the sequel’s release in October.
