Overwatch 2 devs admit PVE focus led to just three new heroes at launch

In a recent AMA on Reddit, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller explained what development factors led to the sequel launching with just three new heroes.

The Overwatch 2 development team was on a press tour of sorts following the live reveal event on June 16th.

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller spoke to gaming outlets and influencers to reveal new details about the team’s next hero shooter in the days that followed.

Now, a Reddit Ask-Me-Anything has given fans even more insight, with Keller going into detail about the main reasons Overwatch 2 will only feature Sojourn, Junker Queen, and a third undisclosed hero at launch.

Why Overwatch 2 only starts with three new heroes

Overwatch 2 Junker Queen character

Junker Queen is the second new character for Overwatch 2, following the reveal of Damage hero Sojourn.

The Overwatch 2 director responded to a comment from user Hellfire_Inferno427 who asked, “After 3 years of no content, why are there only 3 new heroes at launch?”

Keller, who went on record saying that Overwatch 2 is more than just an update to the original game, provided a detailed explanation of the development factors that led to the limited number of new heroes at launch.

He first assures that the team knows new heroes are “incredibly exciting” and that the team is doing everything they can to get them right, but says the explanation for why there aren’t more heroes is “reasonable.”

“For context, Overwatch 2 development was initially split between the PvE and PvP sides of the game, and the way it was planned was to complete most parts of the game once the game was ready to ship was.”

He further states that “As [the team] Keeping iterating on the PvE side of the game meant that the schedule for PvP content and features grew longer.”

Keller has admitted in the past that the team’s focus on PvE content has delayed Overwatch’s PvP developments, which explains why many found the content of the first open beta to be similar to that of the original game.

However, he reiterates that Blizzard is taking steps to address the issue, saying, “In order to be successful with our new plan over the long term, we have expanded and restructured the team.”

Only time will tell if Keller and the team can achieve those goals ahead of Overwatch 2’s October 4 launch, but for now, the new direction seems promising at the very least.
