PARIS — The City of Light is about to go dark.

Luxury stores across the city are turning off their lights at night, leaving Avenue de Montaigne and other areas known for evening window shopping in relative darkness. Tourists are heading to the monument to take late-night photos, only to find murky shadows. Even the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of France’s rise as an industrial nation, is being shut down prematurely.
