Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi has not agreed to a move to Inter Miami despite reports suggesting he is close, sources told ESPN.

On Sunday, The Times reported that Inter Miami are confident of signing the Argentina captain after the World Cup, but sources close to the 35-year-old have denied the idea there is an agreement.

Messi has previously said he would like to play in Major League Soccer, but the striker has decided to wait until the new year to start thinking about his future and focus on the World Cup.

Miami could prove to be an attractive destination for Messi as he and his family regularly vacation there while also owning a home there, but sources added that talks between the two parties are not yet at an advanced stage.

The former Barcelona star’s contract with PSG runs until June 2023 with an option for an extra year if he decides to pull it off. PSG hope to convince Messi to stay at Parc des Princes for at least another season, especially if they can offer him a competitive team with the potential to win the Champions League.

Messi enjoys his football at PSG and has been in good form in the first half of the season before the World Cup break, scoring 12 goals in 19 games in all competitions.

A return to Barcelona could also be a possibility after club president Joan Laporta said the club has the financial capacity to re-sign Messi two years after his Camp Nou departure.

Messi is aiming for a first World Cup triumph with Argentina in Qatar, the country’s first since Diego Maradona guided them to victory in 1986.
