When I think of foundation, the first thing that comes to mind is cake. No, it’s not cake but my face looks flaky, textured when wearing it. That’s usually because creamy formulas tend to feel dry while most compact versions are too heavy. Looks like Patrick Ta may have cracked the code with his brand new Major Skin Crème Foundation and Finishing Powder Duo. Allow me to explain.
Celebrity makeup artists (like Gigi Hadid and Camila Cabello) just launched their first skincare, so I went to the Patrick Ta Beauty office in Los Angeles to learn all about it. At first, I thought the Major Skin would be fully covered, but I quickly learned that it was very thin – in a good way. This is a lightweight, buildable foundation that is light to medium. It is very forgiving and very leather-like. I would describe it as more coverage than Jones Road What the Foundation but less than KVD Beauty Good Apple Foundation.
Ta said to me, “I want something that is as easy to wear as I am going to wear. “This is your Monday-Friday celebration.” Because most people will want a little extra coverage for a night out, he says. I told him I would probably just add concealer to this pretty foundation. Maybe that will happen next?!
What is especially interesting about this release is that there are more powders that are 1-2 tones lighter than the foundation. I’ve learned that’s how to clear up any oily areas and “unclogs pores.” I say that this is not an allergenic powder. Instead, use the tapered tip of the new Dual Blend Skin Brush ($45 at Sephora) to cover the midpoint of your face and under your eyes. Because the color is a bit lighter, it gives a pretty good brightening effect. Of course, the other end is used to apply foundation and ensure the most even coverage.
There are 24 shades to choose from, taking into account the tone. It’s not the most foundational color ever but the formula is absolutely forgiving. In some seriously harsh light and 100-degree heat in Los Angeles, I managed to capture a photo of how the foundation was created on my face while a makeup artist was applying it. I’m amazed at how bright and smooth I feel, especially since I don’t use concealer or even primer. I’m wearing Fair 3, neutral yellow.
People with dry skin should apply moisturizer before foundation, but if your skin is more oily, you may not need it. (Sunscreen is a must though!)
After I walked around Target for an hour after applying, the foundation still looked great. On the other hand, my hair – let’s not discuss that. The heat is killing me.
I was very impressed with the debut of Patrick Ta’s first skin tone. I keep hearing “the platform is over” but maybe the way we wear it has changed. Let skin glide through – freckles, melasma and all – feeling fresher than ever.
