Pele’s cancer worsens; he will spend Christmas in hospital

Pele’s health has deteriorated while he was hospitalized to regulate his cancer medication, doctors said Wednesday.

The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement Wednesday that Pele’s cancer had progressed and that the 82-year-old Brazilian soccer star was under “elevated care” due to “kidney and heart dysfunction.”

The hospital did not mention any signs of the three-time world champion’s recent respiratory infection, which has been made worse by COVID-19.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known worldwide as Pele, underwent chemotherapy in his cancer treatment after having a colon tumor removed in September 2021. Neither his family nor the hospital said if the cancer had spread to other organs.

Kely Nascimento, one of his daughters, said Pele will remain in the hospital over Christmas.

“We have decided with the doctors that for many reasons, with all the care this new family at Einstein is giving us, staying here is the best thing for us,” she wrote on Instagram. “We’ll even have some caipirinhas (No kidding). We love you and will be providing an update next week.”

Pelé led Brazil to victory at the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups and remains one of the all-time top scorers with 77 goals.

Neymar equaled Pele’s record during the last World Cup. Several tributes and get well wishes were given to the former footballer during the Qatar tournament, which was won by Argentina on Sunday. Pele’s cancer worsens; he will spend Christmas in hospital
