Archaeologists in the UK recently “raised their eyebrows” when they discovered an adult carving on a stone in a Roman fort. The graffiti depicts a crude penis accompanied by a phrase that experts say means “the fucker” next to a person’s name, and it appears to have been etched out by a Roman soldier to insult a comrade.

The stone, which is 16 inches (40 centimeters) wide and 6 inches (15 cm) high, was uncovered on May 19 at Vindolanda, the ruins of a Roman fort south of Hadrian’s Wall — a fortified structure that served as the northern border Roman Empireerected throughout England to defend Roman Britain against the undefeated Picts in Caledonia (consisting of today’s Scotland and parts of northern England). Archaeologists believe that the graffiti was carved into the stone sometime in the third century AD
