One study found that around 81 percent of hotel surfaces sampled had fecal matter.
Many vacationers refuse to bathe in hotel showers, however, some have started cleaning the bathrooms.
A TikTok user filmed herself bleaching and scrubbing her tub before “putting even a finger on it.”
But some users are taking matters into their own hands and using so-called “tub condoms”.

A TikToker filmed her first time using the bath insert and gave it a rave review.
Maddie said, “A lifesaver for hotel bathrooms and rentals!!”
One of her followers was excited about the idea, saying, “I’d definitely try this. Who brings bleach and a scrubbing brush to a hotel…not me!”
A study says that hotel bathrooms aren’t all that bad, even if they look disgusting.
But microbiologist Philip M. Tierno told a reporter that even if the tub looks clean, there is a hidden layer of germs called biofilm.
He describes biofilm as “a nearly undetectable layer of bacteria that adheres to tubs and other surfaces.
Erica Hartmann, an associate professor at Northwestern University, said, “When you first enter a hotel room, there are likely to be microbes left over from the last guest who stayed there.”
But hotel visitor Maddy Mooney told The Daily Beast that she swears by the bath liners to stay clean on vacation.
She said, “If you think about it, the water is clean, so you just need something to cover the bottom and sides of the bath.”
