People are just realizing the original Twinkie wasn’t plain – and contained a surprising flavor

MANY people would be surprised to learn that Twinkies, a popular junk food snack, aren’t always as high in sugar.
The original recipe still wasn’t the healthiest, but it contained more natural ingredients and a surprising taste compared to what’s often sold today.
The Twinkie was invented by the Continental Baking Company in April 1930.
According to an article by news nationthe Twinkie wasn’t always just a yummy treat with custard in it.
At this point, the company’s signature dish was a strawberry shortcrust pastry-style treat filled with fresh strawberries and cream.
in one Article 2010Hostess explained that many of the company’s machines go unused because strawberries are a seasonal delicacy.

Manager James Dewar was looking for a way to increase productivity at the Chicago-area plant by introducing year-round bananas into the recipe.
As the then owner of the Hostess brand, he dubbed them Twinkies after seeing a billboard for Twinkle Toe Shoes.
The recipe only lasted about a decade before Hostess swapped bananas for vanilla-flavored cream due to wartime rationing.
This helped keep Twinkies on store shelves as the banana-flavored variety kept coming back into production at regular intervals for the next 80 years.
The dairy-based recipe from the past now differs from the current ingredients, which include preservatives, less dairy and other additives, likely to extend shelf life.
The Hostess brand isn’t owned by the same people anymore, but the cream-filled popular snack is still a staple.
The banana-flavored Twinkie will also be on permanent sale official hostess website.
Creator James Dewar once told the Chicago Tribune, “Twinkies were the best damn idea I’ve ever had. I still eat at least three of these a day.”
