People are just now realizing what makeup brand MAC stands for — and they’re speechless.

MAC is actually an acronym for the Canadian brand’s original name.

Photographer and makeup artist Frank Toskan and salon owner Frank Angelo launched their house’s cosmetics line Toronto kitchen in 1984 under the name Makeup Art Cosmetics.

The factual name signaled that the brand was aimed at professional makeup artists rather than ordinary women.

Many makeup fans were stunned when they found out what the acronym stands for.

One wrote, “Surely I’m not the only person who just found out MAC stands for Makeup Art Cosmetics.”

Another added, “Today I found out MAC stands for Makeup Art Cosmetics.”

A third said: “Just realized MAC stands for Makeup Art Cosmetics. My whole life is a lie.”

But Makeup Art Cosmetics expanded into the makeup business after its models kept asking if they could give their friends and family products.

Bringing makeup to the masses required a more descriptive name, and so Makeup Art Cosmetics became MAC.

With 500 independent stores and annual sales in excess of £800m (US$1bn), the company is one of the top three make-up brands in the world.

But MAC has stayed true to its origins and continues to produce specialty makeup for movie stars and singers.

Founder Frank Angelo died in 1997 at the age of 49 from a heart attack during surgery.

His death came three years after multinational cosmetics giant Estee Lauder acquired MAC and moved its headquarters from Toronto to Toronto new York.

Angelo’s business partner, Frank Toskan, sold his remaining shares in 1998, giving Estee Lauder full control of the company.
