Now that President Biden has signed his party’s tax, climate and IRS legislation into law, Sen. Joe Manchins narrative is that a grateful Democratic Congress will repay its vote by allowing reform. The party leadership promised that, he says. But the West Virginia Senator’s influence is already gone.

Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva says he does not feel “obligated” to support an approved payout for Mr Manchin. “I didn’t shake hands,” he told the Hill newspaper. “I wasn’t part of the negotiations.” Mr Grijalva added that he and a handful of colleagues intend to request that the approval of amendments be put forward in the House of Representatives for a separate vote, not tied to the next government finance bill, which is a vehicle for reforms to overcome the progressives.
