Philadelphia bicyclist dies weeks after hit-and-run; search for suspect continues

“It’s been a really tough day, a really tough month. It was really quick, all of a sudden,” said the victim’s daughter, Justine Doughty.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A memorial now marks the spot where James Doughty was hit by a car and left to die almost a month ago.

After much prayer, his family learned Saturday morning that he died from injuries sustained in the August 22 accident.

“It’s been a really tough day, a really tough month. It was really fast, all of a sudden,” said Justine Doughty.

Justine learned that her father had died at 3:10 a.m

“You think someone in his condition, surviving nine surgeries and flipping a car… he’s lasted this long. I thought he was going to pull through,” Justine explained through tears.

Police say the 43-year-old cyclist and his girlfriend were traveling in the northbound lanes on Bustleton Avenue. At that moment, a driver heading north caught the man and drove on.

The impact threw him off his bike. According to police, the bike was split in half.

The weeks since have been a roller coaster for the whole family, but they had high hopes for his recovery.

Things took a turn, with Justine saying he just barely held on.

James Doughty is survived by five children, grandchildren, his sister and his father.

While the family tries to find a solution, the driver who hit him is still out there.

Hours after the hit-and-run, police found a white Range Rover in Rhawnhurst, officials believe was the vehicle involved in the accident.

Justine hopes the driver will come forward to bring peace to her family and justice to her father.

“Now my father is gone and I will never get him and that person back, he is at home with his family but my fathers are not with us,” Justine said.

The investigations are still ongoing.
