Philadelphia Councilmember Allan Domb resigns, says he is considering run for mayor

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Allan Domb, a member of the Philadelphia City Council, announced Monday that he is stepping down from the city council effective immediately and is considering running for mayor.

In an exclusive interview with Action News, Democrat Domb said he made the decision because the city is in crisis and needs big changes.

“It’s a responsible thing for me to consider running for mayor, especially since Philadelphia is a city in crisis. It’s a public safety crisis, people don’t feel safe in their homes, they don’t feel safe going to work, they don’t feel safe going to school with their kids,” he said.

Domb was elected to the Philadelphia City Council in 2015 after a long career in real estate.

Mayor Jim Kenney’s term as mayor expires in 2024.

Domb released the following statement:

“As I announce today my resignation from the Philadelphia City Council, I am deeply grateful to the people of Philadelphia for their trust in me as a leader and I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished over the past nearly seven years From dollars back into the pockets of hard-working families, to help keep our hospitality industry afloat during the peak of the pandemic, to provide essential relief to workers and businesses, to protect homeowners, and to support educational and human resources initiatives, we have delivered real results for the city and its people, but there is still a lot to do.

“Today our city stands at a crossroads – Philadelphia is the poorest city in the country. We’re looking at the highest murder rate in our history. Too many people feel unsafe in their homes, their cars, and our transiting systems and roads. Too many residents and businesses lack the basic opportunities necessary to thrive in our communities. But while the challenges we face are great, so is the opportunity we have to be the city our citizens deserve, more than ever we must apply common sense and practical solutions to improve the lives of all Philadelphians and prioritize public safety in a meaningful way.

“Our city is a city of fighters and believers, and I will never stop working to create a Philadelphia that delivers what it promises for everyone.”
