Philadelphia Deadly Shooting: 16-year-old leaving corner store on way to friend’s house killed in Strawberry Mansion, police say

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A 16-year-old man was killed after exiting a corner store when more than 60 shots were fired in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Police say it happened just after 11:30 p.m. Monday on Diamond and Newkirk streets.

Officials responded to numerous 911 calls about a shooting.

Arriving officers found the 16-year-old victim unconscious on the sidewalk. He had been shot multiple times.

The teenager was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police found 63 spent cartridge cases at the scene. Several parked vehicles were also hit by the shots.

“Sixty-three shots, that’s a lot of shots. It appears that this could have been a shooting of some sort just based on where the ballistics evidence is located, but we’re not sure at this point,” said Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small.

According to police, the 16-year-old victim had just gone to the store with a friend and was on his way back to the friend’s house when the shooting began.

“We’re not sure of a motive,” Small said.

Police say the only description they have for the suspects is five men wearing dark clothing.

They were last seen walking north on Dover Street.

As of last Thursday, there have been 19 fatal shootings of youth under the age of 17, down three from the same time last year.

Last week, a new youth curfew came into effect to protect youth from gun violence.

For children under 13, the 9:30pm curfew remains unchanged

Teens aged 14 to 17 must now be home by 10pm

Previously, 16- and 17-year-olds were allowed out until midnight. Children 14 and 15 already had a 10pm curfew.

The changed schedule is valid until September 29th.
