Philadelphia hotels nearly fully booked for World Series games

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Live! casino & Hotel in South Philadelphia has doubled its business thanks to an influx of visitors coming to the city to catch the World Series.

Rain washed out Monday night’s game, forcing visitors to cancel return flights and book another night’s accommodation in area hotels. But most are already fully booked.

“That was part of the challenge of deferring our work… Things are pretty expensive. We couldn’t stay another night here, so we had to book another hotel,” said Thomas Straus of State College.

Hotel reservations are up more than 20% as a result of the World Series, according to the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, with Center City hotel occupancy rates exceeding 90%.

“We accommodated as many as we could and offered people recommendations on some of the other local hotels,” Billhimer said.

Thursday’s extra game has kept South Philadelphia’s Termini Brothers busy, baking 20% more Phillies-themed cupcakes than originally planned.

“We bake the cupcakes pretty much non-stop. We sell about 200 to 250 a day and a lot of people order in advance so we actually have them,” said Jackie Bowman, operations manager for Termini Brothers.

Keeping stores in stock and keeping stores fully staffed for Thursday has been a mess everywhere, but they say it’s a good problem to have.
