Philadelphia Shooting: Gunman approaches couple out for early walk on Ashburner Street in Holmesburg, shoots man in leg

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man out for a walk early Wednesday morning was shot dead in the Holmesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Police say a gunman fired at a couple, a 39-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, along the Pennypack Creek Bridge near a shopping mall on Ashburner and Walker streets around 1am.

The police speak of at least nine shots.

The man was shot once in the leg. The woman was not injured.

Officers were nearby on patrol and heard rapid gunfire, police say. They ran to the crime scene and found the victim.

He was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in stable condition.

Police say both are licensed gun owners and were armed at the time. However, no one returned fire.

Police say the couple “showed great restraint” and fled the area.

The couple told police they take the same walk every night.

What led to the shooting is still unclear at this time.

Police are using surveillance cameras to investigate.
