Philippe Coutinho in 5 Aston Villa players for Unai Emery to be sold in January

The 2022 World Cup is over, but the January transfer window is almost here. Therefore, Unai Emery should now be looking to sell these five Aston Villa players – including Philippe Coutinho.

Emery has had an extended period to take charge of his team after replacing Steven Gerrard on November 1. The Villans sacked the 42-year-old after losing 3-0 at Fulham in October. They extended their run of four winless games in the Premier League after two wins this season.

Aston Villa bounced back after parting ways with Gerrard, with interim boss Aaron Danks in a 4-0 win over Brentford. Emery would take the helm and enjoy a perfect start with a 3-1 win over Manchester United. The 51-year-old also won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Emery’s perfect start as manager of Aston Villa saw the Birmingham club climb from 16th to 12th in the table. They will continue their Premier League season at home against Liverpool on Boxing Day. The Reds travel to Villa Park looking to improve on their sixth-place finish.

After six weeks without a top-flight game, Emery should be tackling the Liverpool meeting knowing who is doing their best XI. The break for the World Cup in Qatar could also have been the final nail in some players’ coffins before the Spaniard tackles mid-season sales.

With that in mind, HITC Football has researched five Aston Villa players that Emery was set to sell in January. The Spaniard is also reportedly keen to move some of them on…

Philippe Coutinho is making headlines over the Aston Villa players Unai Emery can sell in January

Coutinho is the headline-grabber who should be looking to sell Aston Villa player Emery in January despite only joining permanently in May. Gerrard convinced the Villans to buy the Brazilian from Barcelona for £17m after he initially spent six months on loan at the Villans last season.

But while his temporary move started out promising, his permanent move so far has been a disaster. The 30-year-old provided five goals and three assists in his 19 Premier League games in 2021/22. Still, Aston Villa would not pay the £33m option in their loan deal.

Villa Park bosses will be happy to have negotiated a deal at almost half price again in the summer. Coutinho has failed to score or assist in 12 Premier League games so far this season. According to SofaScore, he has only had six of his 16 shots on target this season.

The plight of the 69-cap Brazil international as a constant Aston Villa star has apparently overwhelmed Emery. Coluna do Fla report that the Villans are already ready to sell Coutinho in 2023. He is also a target for Flamengo, who are considering a transfer deal.

Aston Villa will have to sell Morgan Sanson in January if a club wants the player

Aston Villa must try to sell Morgan Sanson in January but must hope a club will also want to sign the player. The midfielder cost the Villans £16million to sign from Marseille during Dean Smith’s tenure in January 2021. But the 28-year-old has still only played 21 games.

Only 20 of the former France Under-21 star’s claret and blue appearances have also been top-flight appearances. Sanson has watched 27 Premier League games from the bench and sidelined 28 after a series of injuries. He has suffered from knee and hamstring problems since he joined.

In a constant battle to stay fit, Sanson has only started six Premier League games with Aston Villa so far. He is also signed at Birmingham on a £48,000-a-week wage until June 2025.

Unai Emery could sell Emi Buendia to sign his own Aston Villa players

Emery could try to sell Emi Buendia in January to use the money to sign his own Aston Villa players. The 25-year-old cost the Villans a club-record £33m in June 2021, rising to £38m with surcharges. He also left Norwich City to join Villa as Championship Player of the Season.

But since moving from East Anglia to the West Midlands, Buendia has provided just five goals and six assists in 50 Premier League games. He’s also only scored once and is yet to give up an assist this season. The one-cap Argentine has made 15 league appearances this season.

Buendia has shown he can cause problems for Premier League teams with his ball skills. But the rarity with which the 5-foot-7 Dynamo delivers an end product – scoring in the second game of the season – could see Emery looking for a replacement in the near future.

Unai Emery can atone for Steven Gerrard’s choice of Marvelous Nakamba

Emery can atone for Gerrard turning down offers for Marvelous Nakamba by selling the Aston Villa player in January. The Herald reported in August that Fulham and Nottingham Forest have made offers for the Zimbabwe midfielder. But the Villans opted to keep the 28-year-old.

The Cottagers and Reds have also put up lucrative sums of money to secure promotion to the top flight. But Gerrard stood in the way of Marco Silva and Steve Cooper as he preferred Nakamba to stay and agreed to extend his £32.5k-week deal beyond 2024.

As it stands, Aston Villa are yet to sign a new contract with Nakamba. The 26-cap ace hasn’t played a single second in the Premier League this season either. He has seen eight of the Villans’ 15 top-flight games as an unused substitute under Gerrard and Danks.

Johan Lange has already told Frederic Guilbert to look for a new club

Aston Villa sporting director Johan Lange has already told Frederic Guilbert to look for a new club. Birmingham Live reported in November that the Villans boss would like to sack the defender in January. Emery also has no plans to add the Frenchman to his Villa side.

Lange instructed Guilbert and his agent to find potential suitors as Aston Villa don’t want him leaving for nothing next June. The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. He agreed to a four-and-a-half-year deal of £40,000 a week in a £5million transfer in January 2019.

But the former Stade Malherbe Caen star has only played three of his 32 games in all competitions since his debut season at Villa Park. Smith made 29 appearances for Guilbert in the 2019-20 season. Since then, however, the right-back has exclusively featured in EFL Cup games.
