Phoenixville Area High School postpones football game due to threat of violence

PHOENIXVILLE, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Another threat of violence on Friday involved a football game at a Chester County school, this time Phoenixville Area High School.

“It’s annoying,” said parent Jose Rodriguez. “It’s happening more and more.”

School officials postponed the Friday night football game against rival Pope John Paul II High School due to an unfounded threat of violence on social media.

“I think they could have just kept it and upped the security,” said parent Rashid Green.

“We’re upset because it could have been a good game on a Friday night instead of a Saturday morning, so it’s not fair,” said junior footballer Jamie Gray. “We can’t enjoy the Friday night lights.”

Only parents of both teams can participate in the game that has been postponed for Saturday.

“I have a feeling that there might be violence, because knowing that our two schools don’t like each other, something might be brewing there,” said sophomore football player TJ Howard. “I think they took the right precautions.”

Similar safety protocols were put in place after someone made a violent threat at a Coatesville Area High School football game last Friday.

The school faced 14 threats of violence in three weeks, leading to lockdowns, evacuations and canceled events. On Wednesday, a 17-year-old was charged with making one of the threats.

“Because of all the gun violence that’s going on, I definitely understand why, because it’s dangerous,” said parent Pernette Howard. “We have to protect our children and we never know.”

When the situation in Coatesville was raised last week, Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan released a statement that said, in part, “If we discover that a threat to disrupt the school as a hoax has been made, we will.” hold these individuals accountable for their actions and prosecute them.”

Police are investigating this threat against the Phoenixville Area High School. The school district and police did not respond to 6abc’s requests for comment.
