Phoenixville’s Colonial Theatre prepares for 23rd ‘BlobFest’

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa (WPVI) – This weekend, Phoenixville will once again be taken over by The Blob!

For the 23rd year, the historic Colonial Theater is hosting Blobfest, drawing people from across the country to immerse themselves in the spirit of the 1950s sci-fi classic.

The Blob was filmed at the Colonial Theater in 1957, along with other Chester County locations.

BlobFest takes place every year on the weekend after July 4th.

Since 1999, organizers say the event has grown, much like The Blob itself.

“It draws thousands of people to Phoenixville,” says Jennifer Carlson, executive director of Colonial Theater. “They come from all over the country to attend this festival. Also, local companies make their own blob creations. There’s a blob burger, blob chocolates, a blob beer.”

The three-day festival is packed with events, from a 5K Blob Run to the Blob Ball to a costume contest.

There is also a tradition not to be missed.

“One of the most popular activities during BlobFest is a re-enactment of the ‘run-out’ scene in ‘The Blob,'” says Carlson,

“People watch in the theater and then The Blob oozes out of the projection studio and they all run onto Bridge Street.”

There’s also a street festival with live music and a drive to the filming locations of The Blob.

The BlobFest begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
