PJ Shorts Are Just Great Shorts, Period

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine texted me in a panic. His boyfriend told him about the condition of his PJs (or lack thereof), and he confessed that he had never given them much thought before. Help mehe begged. I’m a hot sleeper and I really don’t need the extra fabric to weigh me down when trying to hit a few Z’s. I want to swoon in a range of glamorous Zegna fabrics, but are there any body options? Any budget-friendly out there? (I’m doing a bit of editing, but you get the gist.)

You’re in luck, my man, I replied with wisdom. I sent him a link to this handsome set from J.Crew and then quickly forgot all about it. Until he hit me again, a few weeks later.

Yo… These troublemakers are extremely difficult. Would it be crazy if I started wearing bottoms like, frequent short?!

Yo… I replied, beaming with pride. Now you are thinking with the inquisitiveness of a GQ editor. It wouldn’t be crazy at all!

My friend got into something. As it happened, I just bought a pair of Baserange Ole shorts — crisp, cotton PJ-esque joints that masquerade as casual wear. This genre is already on my mind. And the more I consider the question, the complete absurdity of getting rid of a great pair of bedroom-specific shorts. I am a peacockI imagine those PJs screaming wistfully: Yyou have to let me fly!

In terms of sheer aesthetics, there’s not much that separates these shorts from a classic pair of shorts, save for a fully enclosed silhouette, drawstring waist, and roomier lining. They’re lightweight, slightly oversized, and cut to curve right around the knee, with plenty of room for you to breathe. Think of them as a not-so-distant relative of the shorts you pack to soak up some rays of Portofino sunshine; less sagging, slimmer and stronger, more Nicholson in Something’s Gotta Give.

As a group, they make up one half of an excellent group of closed eyes. But with a crumpled hat, rumpled Oxford shirt and penny loafers? Or better yet, the tones, a cool linen button down, and fishing sandals?! Real dreams come true.
