Pokemon Go players bash Niantic over “stupid” Fossil Cup challenge

Pokemon Go players are deriding Niantic for allowing advantageous types like Steel and Water-types in the supposedly “rocky” Fossil Cup challenge.

The Pokemon Go Season 11 Battle League is underway, with the third round of events starting earlier this week on June 15th.

Trainers are currently competing in the latest cups and leagues: the Master League and the Fossil Cup, both running from June 15th to June 22nd.

However, some have started slamming Niantic for typing for the Fossil Cup, and many are wondering why they would even allow Steel- and Water-type Pokemon to enter.

Registeel is one of the strongest Steel-type Pokemon in Pokemon Go, but it’s certainly not a Fossil Pokemon.

The discussion began after a post on the Pokemon Go subreddit gained prominence poking fun at the fact that Registeel is the star of the Fossil Cup across eight Pokemon generations instead of one of the available Fossil Pokemon.

That’s because the Fossil Cup rules allow any Rock, Steel, or Water-type Pokemon to participate, although the name “Fossil” implies a greater emphasis on Rock-type Pokemon.

While it might technically make sense to include Water-type Pokémon, given the nature of real-world oceanic creature fossils, including both Steel-type and Water-type Pokémon seems odd, especially when you look at how the type table works.

Both Steel and Water-types are 2x effective against the predominantly rock-oriented Fossil group of Pokemon, making them essentially useless in the Fossil Cup.

Pokemon Go players echoed the sentiment in the comments, with one user saying, “You should just call it Steel, Rock, [and] water league.”

“Forget Rock, because no one will use them. Using Rock is a disadvantage as it is weak against the other two types. Such a stupid league,” said a player named “raadjl”.

While some trainers like Reddit user “DeadmanDT” claimed that they “sticked to using only fossil Pokemon” to stay in the spirit of the Fossil Cup, others noted the downside that would result, like ZmobieMrh, who replied: “And my Ferrothorn thanks you.”

For now, through June 22nd, players will only have to choose their Venom between Season 11’s Master League or the Steel-type-dominated Fossil Cup.
