Pokemon TCG player leaves judges baffled after entering NAIC with jumbo deck

A Pokemon TCG player named Matthew Verive has left judges stunned after competing in the North American International Championships with a deck made entirely of jumbo cards.

Almost every time The Pokemon Company releases a new deck of cards, they offer a product that includes a jumbo version of the featured card.

These were limited to the latest popular card from the set, which hasn’t stopped anyone from using it in a competitive deck so far. These usually consist of a variety of Pokémon, Trainer, and Energy cards to create a 60-card deck.

However, Matthew Verive has garnered a lot of attention after bringing a jumbo deck to NAIC that stunned the judges.

Jumbo cards included Charizard, Leafeon, Pikachu, and more.

At the start of the North American International Championships (which, by the way, are open to anyone who wants to play), Matthew shared what he played the event with.

After his first (and only) best-of-three round, he tweeted the results. “For the curious – I lost game 1, my opponent won game 2 (just to force a game 3 for funsies), and then my deck got checked,” his tweet reads.

Matthew also explained that after the “longest deck check ever,” the judges revealed they weren’t sure if his cards were legal — and spoke to them after the round was over.

He then added: “I spoke to the judges’ baton afterwards and if I hadn’t fallen I might have gotten a DQ – for marked cards! The oversized cards are not cut to the same high quality as regular cards, so some cards could understandably be identified.”

Verive made it clear that it was all just for fun and posted pictures of his deck with a disclaimer for potential imitators.

“Oh, and don’t try this at home folks – I expect the rules will be changed soon to clarify usable card sizes,” he cautioned.

Judging by the reactions of viewers, the TCG player who takes a jumbo deck to an international championship will go down in history as an understated icon.
