Pokimane speaks out against ‘simp’ hate: “it reinforces misogyny”

During a recent Twitch stream, Pokimane called out “simple” hatred and explained how it has increased misogyny and affected her own relationships with male friends.

Simp, a North American term defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “a silly or foolish person,” has been corrupted by the internet and is more commonly used to demean a person seeking affection from someone else.

The term “simp” has become a popular slur on Twitch, YouTube, and Twitter for those defending or praising female content creators. Pokimane’s community is often in the crosshairs of “plain” hate, as a portion of their viewers are younger boys seeking the streamer’s attention.

During a ban appeal segment on their June 26 stream, Pokimane reviewed the ban of a user who “went through a simple chase phase.” The streamer then opened up about her feelings towards “plain” haters.

Pokimane frowns on “simple” hatred

When Pokimane reviewed a ban request from a user who called other viewers simplistic, he explained to the user why he shouldn’t use “simp” as an insult. She wrote that if the user’s parents are still together, her father is likely simping for her mother, expressing that “simping” is just a normal part of loving other people.

She then addressed her viewers and shared with them why she disagreed with the matter. “Isn’t it strange that boys are told ‘kinship’ is so awful? “When you’re into a woman, it’s so awful.” But it’s not.”

Pokimane went on to label “simple” hate as “sexist,” even claiming that it “amplifies so much understated misogyny.” Then she spoke candidly about how the negative connotations associated with “Simps” affected her.

“Throughout my career as a female streamer, I’ve felt on numerous occasions that my male colleagues or male friends are afraid to advocate for me because they’ll be labeled as Simps,” Pokimane said. “How else could you describe it than with a strange internalized misogyny?”

In late 2020, Twitch banned the use of the word “simp” following an overhaul of the platform’s harassment policies. This caused streamers to be both excited and confused, and Twitch had to clarify that it would only take action against users who use “simp” as an insult.

Regardless, Pokimane feels that the culture being bred in “simple” hatred will continue to reinforce misogynistic behaviors that she will not tolerate on her stream. She proved this by rejecting the appeal against the ban on “common hunters” before proceeding.
