Police believe fatal North Philadelphia shooting on Taney Street was case of self-defense

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Police believe a fatal shooting Wednesday night in North Philadelphia was a case of self-defense.

It happened around 6 p.m. on the 2800 block of North Taney Street.

According to police, a man opened fire on another man who approached him and drew a gun.

The 27-year-old man died after being hit multiple times in the chest.

According to Inspector DF Pace, the 27-year-old man circled the block while having some sort of verbal contact with the gunman.

At some point during the incident, the 27-year-old man got out of the vehicle and pulled out a gun, Pace said. Then the shooter opened fire.

The 27-year-old died in hospital.

Police said they found a bullet from the shooter still lodged in the man’s gun.

“There is a projectile, presumably from the gunman’s gun, embedded in the deceased’s gun and it is still there, which lends credibility to the information we received from the gunman that he fired in self-defense.” said Pace.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

Police said the shooter had a carry permit and was cooperating with police.
