Police in Florida say they fatally shot armed woman who ‘ambushed’ them in park

Authorities say police fatally shot a gunman at a Florida park who “ambushed” them while they were searching for a suspected narcotics officer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Police fatally shot a gunman in a Florida park who “ambushed” them while searching for a suspect in a drug investigation, officials said.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee. Tallahassee police officers and a Leon County sheriff’s deputy responded to the park after receiving reports that the drug suspect they were looking for, a man, was seen there, the department said in a Friday press release.

While in the park, along with the suspect, they encountered a second man, who officers realized had made previous threats against law enforcement, and the woman who worked with the second man. The second man was arrested while the woman walked away, but she returned a short time later and fired a rifle, Tallahassee Police said in a statement.

Fearing for her life, the officers and the deputy returned fire and she was hit. She was taken to a hospital where she died.

No police officers were injured and there is no danger to public safety, the police said.

The alleged drug detective was arrested in the park.

Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation. Police said they were committed to “conducting a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the shooting.”
