President Biden has tested positive for the corona virus, the White House announced on Thursday.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday Biden had “very mild symptoms” of COVID-19.
“He started taking Paxlovid,” said Jean-Pierre. “In harmony with [U.S. Centers for Disease Control] guidelines, he will isolate himself in the White House and continue to perform all his duties fully during that time.”
As the oldest president to ever hold office at 79, Biden’s diagnosis is a cause for concern, although his vaccination schedule could help him avoid serious complications from the virus.
He received a fourth dose of the vaccine on March 30 and was found to be in good health during his annual physical last November.
But the president’s positive test comes amid an ongoing spate of high-profile COVID-19 diagnoses in Washington, as cabinet members, senior advisers and lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), have all contracted the virus .
Aware of the public’s fatigue with mask mandates and other public health guidelines, Biden has tried to convince the nation that resuming normal — and unmasked — gatherings is fine as long as people have been vaccinated, while also urging Congress to approve additional funds to ensure that vaccines and test kits remain available.
Biden’s positive test is also a reminder of how difficult it can be to eliminate the potential for infection, even for someone as protected as the president. According to the White House, anyone who travels or meets with Biden must be tested beforehand, and masks are mandatory in the building.
Former President Trump, whose White House has been much more lax on coronavirus procedures like mask-wearing, also contracted the virus during his tenure.
Since his case preceded vaccines, Trump became seriously ill. He was given oxygen and an experimental antibody treatment and was hospitalized for three days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
