President Joe Biden Asks If Deceased Congresswoman Is Present At White House Conference

At a White House conference on food insecurity on Wednesday, President Joe Biden inquired about the whereabouts of a congresswoman who died a month earlier.

Biden took a moment during his speech at the event, which was the first White House hunger conference since 1969, to pay tribute to a number of elected officials from both parties. Wednesday’s bill establishing the conference had the support of all those it named and had the late Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana as a co-sponsor.

“I want to thank all of you here for serving bipartisan elected officials like Rep. (Jim) McGovern, Sen. (Mike) Braun, Sen. (Cory) Booker, Rep. – Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie? I don’t think she would be here – to help make this a reality.”

Walorski, 58, died in a car accident last month that also killed two of her employees. In 2013 she began her term in Congress. The congresswoman served as co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus before her death. Later on Wednesday, when questioned by reporters about the remark, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre clarified that Biden was indeed referring to Walorski.

When reporters repeatedly asked him about Biden’s statements at the conference on Wednesday, Jean-Pierre reacted tensely. Despite being asked about it several times during the White House press briefing, Jean-Pierre refused to say whether Biden was wrong. Instead, she argued that the President had the late congresswoman in mind when he made the remark, and she even once called a reporter “rude” for raising the issue. After reading the President’s remarks on Walorski to Jean-Pierre, she responded:

“I totally understand. I just explained it – everyone was talking about her. You know, what we witnessed today and what the President was able to highlight at this conference was her focus on tackling food insecurity in America. And it’s something he treasures and honors.”
