The Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) has asked the BAI to allocate senior athletes to the state.

Confirming this development, BAI general secretary Sanjay Mishra said the national sports governing body had received an official invitation to bid from the MBA.

“The Maharashtra Badminton Association has shown their particular interest in hosting this year’s Senior National Tournament. BAI officially received their letter during the executive committee meeting on May 15 in New Delhi. The tournament organizers will make the final decision on the allocation of National Senior students to MBA,” said Sanjay Mishra told Sportskeeda on Thursday.

The BAI Tournament Committee is headed by Sekhar Biswas, Vice President of BAI, while the convenor is Omar Rashid, General Secretary of BAI.

The 12-member tournament committee is likely to meet soon to make a final decision on the MBA to host the 2022 Senior National Championship. The committee was established recently to organize different age groups and senior national tournaments.

Sanjay Mishra said: “During the league committee meeting, they will also likely discuss proposals from various cantonal associations regarding the hosting of junior and junior ranked tournaments. and senior level of All India.

“The final domestic schedule for 2022-23 will be announced after the tournament committee meeting. We have received a number of applications from various affiliated state entities bidding to host level tournaments. The tournament organizers will make the final decision and announce the schedule soon.”

The Poona County and Capital Badminton Association (PDMBA) would like to host the National Senior Badminton Tournament as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations.

MBA President Arun Lakhani has confirmed that Maharashtra has requested approval from the national regulator to allocate National Seniors to Pune.

“PDMBA founded in 1946 has completed 75 glorious years recently. They wanted to celebrate this momentous occasion by hosting the Senior Nations. As MBA president, I have made their request to BAI and I am confident that we will win the final slot from BAI. The tournament organizers are expected to make an official announcement soon,” said BAI treasurer Arun Lakhani.

Under the chairmanship of Arun Lakhani, Nagpur hosted the 82nd National Summit at the Division Sports Complex in Mankapur in 2017 in a grand manner. For the first time in Indian badminton history, all of India’s top players, including Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, participated in the tournament.

Pune last hosted the Senior Nationals in 1997. Pullela Gopichand won the men’s singles title at PDMBA Hall. If the MBA wins the bid, Pune will host the Senior Nationals after a long 25-year period.
