Putin’s Escalation Faces Risks in Russia-Ukraine War

President Vladimir Putin’s moves to mobilize up to 300,000 reservists, threaten nuclear strikes and annex occupied parts of Ukraine show how bad the war has been for Russia so far, military and political analysts say, and are unlikely to happen they will halt or reverse the Ukrainian advance Battlefield situation in the immediate future.

Mr Putin made the announcements a day after early referendums on joining Russia were set for Friday in the Russian-held parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. The decisions followed a swift military defeat that forced Russian forces to evacuate another partially occupied Ukrainian region, Kharkiv, earlier this month and pressured Russian nationalists to escalate the war.
