QB Bryce Young’s shoulder soreness not ‘nearly as bad,’ coach Nick Saban says

KNOXVILLE, TEN – No. 3 Alabama coach Nick Saban told ESPN Friday that quarterback Bryce Young is on track to start in No. 3 on Saturday. 6 Tennessee, but that the final decision will be made during the pre-game warm-up.

“He did a lot more training this week and threw a lot more than he did a week ago,” said Saban. “He wants to play and feels healthy enough to play. We’ll know for sure as soon as he gets on the field, starts throwing and how he feels afterwards.”

Young, the Heisman Trophy winner a year ago, missed Alabama’s 24-20 win over Texas A&M last week after spraining his right throwing shoulder against Arkansas a week earlier.

Saban said last week that Young was a game-time decision, but Alabama decided before the game he wasn’t ready and instead played on redshirt freshman Jalen Milroe, who threw three touchdown passes but also had three turnovers.

Young threw himself into the tunnel at Bryant-Denny Stadium a week ago before coming onto the field to warm up. He stood and watched the other quarterbacks during the throwing portion of the warm-up.

Saban said Friday that he feels a lot better about Young’s chances than he did a week ago.

The plan is for Young to go through the full pre-match warm-up at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. Young didn’t throw Thursday, but that was intentional to rest him for game day.

“There’s no reason to rush a quarterback with that kind of injury,” Saban said. “Bryce is such a competitor that he always wants to play. The pain he had last week wasn’t nearly as bad. You can see that when he throws it. But we still have to make sure everything is fine before the game. “

The Crimson Tide and Vols meet Saturday for the first time since 1989 as undefeated teams.

Young has rushed for 1,202 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He’s also rushed for three touchdowns. Young is 18-2 as a starter from Alabama.

Saturday’s game should be one of the better quarterback games of the season in college football. Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker has passed for 1,432 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also rushed for three touchdowns.
