Rams place QB Matthew Stafford on injured reserve

The Rams placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve Saturday with a neck injury, almost certainly ending the 14-year-old pro’s season.

Stafford, 34, was released from concussion protocol on Friday but ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks at SoFi Stadium.

John Wolford will start in place of Stafford.

The Rams have six games left. Stafford would only be eligible to return in their last two games against the Chargers and Seahawks. It seems unlikely the Rams would activate him for games that are on track to become irrelevant to a team going into Sunday’s game with a 3-8 record and a five-game losing streak.

Stafford joins star receiver Cooper Kupp, receiver Allen Robinson and other starters on injured reserve. Star defenseman Aaron Donald also won’t play Sunday as he sustained a high ankle sprain that could put the three-time NFL Defenseman of the Year on injured reserve.

Stafford has passed 10 touchdowns with 8 interceptions, a dramatic decrease from last season when he had 41 touchdowns with 17 interceptions and led the Rams to the Super Bowl title.

Stafford, who played behind an injury-plagued offensive line, has been on concussion record twice this season.

He was first put on the record two days after being sacked four times in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla. on Nov. 6.

Stafford sat out a game and returned to face the New Orleans Saints on November 20 in New Orleans. However, Stafford left the game after being dismissed in the third quarter, telling medical staff he was experiencing numbness in his legs.

Stafford sat out last Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo.

Asked on Friday what direction he leans towards closing Stafford for the season, manager Sean McVay said there were “so many layers” to the decision.

“I’m not an expert on this,” he said, “but if there’s any sense of it, will it be better in the long run or it’ll take a few more weeks, things like that I think will sort themselves out in the end.”
