Rapper Slowthai Apologizes For Swastika T-Shirt

Rapper Slowthai apologized for wearing a T-shirt with a swastika on the front at a festival appearance.

The British rapper wore a t-shirt with a swastika under the word “DESTROY,” which was a nod to fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s famous 1977 “Destroy” t-shirt.

He says the t-shirt should be anti-fascist.

“I feel sorry for anyone who is offended because I am wearing an anti-fascist/anti-regime t-shirt and using the symbol it represents,” he wrote. “I want you to know that I am strongly opposed to anti-Semitism and fascism of any kind, something that the t-shirt with the word ‘destroy’ over the symbol was meant to exemplify.”

The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival in Montreal released its own statement about the t-shirt.

“An artist appeared on stage on Saturday wearing a controversial T-shirt with a swastika on it, which caused confusion. The t-shirt denounces the regime,” read the festival’s statement. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have misinterpreted this message and felt hurt.”
